Mumbai terrorist guilty
[ST] NEW DELHI - MOHAMMED Ajmal Kasab, the smiling Pakistani gunman accused of causing dozens of deaths in the terrorist attacks on Mumbai 17 months ago, was found guilty yesterday. He faces the death sentence.
The only one among the 10 Pakistani terrorists who struck Mumbai to be captured alive, the 22-year-old faced 86 charges, including murder, waging war on the state, criminal conspiracy and armed assault. He was pronounced guilty on all counts.
A total of 166 people, including 23 non-Indians, died in the 72-hour shooting spree and standoff with security forces.
Among the dead was a Singaporean woman, the first Singaporean to be killed in a terrorist attack abroad.
Delivering a 500-page judgment, Special Court Judge M.L. Tahilyani said clinching evidence against Kasab came from the pictures and testimony of a Mumbai photographer who captured him strolling through the city's main commuter train terminus with an AK-47 rifle in hand and a rucksack on his back.
Prosecutors also proved that DNA evidence lifted from a vessel that brought the gunmen ashore matched Kasab's and that of six others. Six hundred witnesses, including the Mumbai photographer Sebastian D'Souza, appeared for the prosecution.
Two Indians accused of helping the terrorists with ground support and logistics planning were let off by the judge, who said the case against them was weak on 'quantity and quality'. Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam said he would appeal against the ruling, insisting that there was clinching evidence that the two were linked to the Lashkar-e-Taiba militant outfit.
