[DC] A lecturer of an Australian university has been accused for pressuring foreign students including a Malaysian for sex in exchange for higher marks.
The Western Australia Corruption and Crime Commission (CCC) report tabled in the Perth's State Parliament on Thursday contained five claims of serious misconduct against the finance academic, Dr Nasrul Ameer Ali.
But it did not pursue further action as none of the complainants wanted to face a criminal prosecution.
Dr Nasrul was accussed for the misconduct when he was lecturing at Curtin Business School in Perth, where he was first employed in 2004.
He was terminated following the complaints of two students in April last year.
Then, he moved to teach at Murdoch University, which also sacked him recently following the scandal.
The CCC claimed that Dr Nasrul has asked three female students, aged between 20 and 24, to think of "something" to convince him in exchange for their marks, and eventually rejected their suggestions of offers of gifts or money.
Two of the students were from China and another from Malaysia.
One of them told the CCC she met Dr Nasrul at a fast food restaurant to discuss her performance in the class, and later went to his home as he said the place was too noisy.
"It was then that the lecturer told the student to live with him. At this time he had his arm along the back of the couch behind (the student), which made her feel uncomfortable," the report said.
"Dr Nasrul said he wanted her to satisfy him and stay the night but the student answered she had no time."
The evidence supported the students' belief that he was asking them for sex, the commission found.
While there was no sexual contact between Dr Nasrul and the students, the report said he purposefully targeted young, vulnerable, full fee-paying overseas female students.
His father, a high-profile academic and Islamic spokesman Dr Ameer Ali, who also a lecturer at Murdoch, told WAtoday.com.au that the report allowed for "no natural justice".
"It's their word against him. There was no recommendations made, they just took the students’ word and that was it."
Nasrul Ali also reportedly reduced a fourth student's marks to a fail because she did not meet him while they were separately visiting Malaysia.
She claimed Dr Nasrul also marked down a paper from a group paper of hers from 73 to 50 out of 100 because he was annoyed with her.
Curtin University vice-chancellor Jeanette Hacket apologised to the four students, three of whom have since graduated.
She said the students had all been offered counselling and were refunded the AU$2,275 (RM6,500) fee paid to take the class. The commission said Dr Nasrul admitted he was offering pass marks for sex but said "he only wanted to see if they would agree" and had no intention of following through.
