TARIAN PENDET: Indonesia Marah Malaysia Lagi!
Laporan Media Indonesia:
[JAKARTA POST] 23 Agustus - The presence of Balinese dancing and a leather shadow puppet in a Malaysian tourism ad has once again upset Indonesians, who are saying it is an attempt to claim the art forms as their own.
A member of the Regional Representatives Council (DPD) and Balinese dance experts staged a protest Saturday against the Malaysian government at the Denpasar Arts Center.
“We have all heard of some aspect of the Indonesian culture that has been claimed by Malaysia as theirs, such as the wayang [Javanese puppet], batik and reog Ponorogo [masked dance from East Java],” said counselor Ida Ayu Agung Mas, referring to similar controversial reports.
“This time, they are trying to claim the Pendet, which is a sacred and original dance from Bali, as their own.
“As a representative for the DPD, the Group of Indonesian Youth Concerned with Culture and Arts, and experts on Balinese dances, I will send a letter of protest to the Malaysian government through their embassy in Indonesia,” Ida Ayu said at the protest, attended by some 10 people.
The Malaysian Embassy in Indonesia earlier denied the country had made claims on batik and other forms of Indonesian culture in its tourism campaigns. Malaysia’s Ambassador Dato Zainal Abidin Zain was quoted as saying in late 2007 that the Javanese brought the reog dance to Malaka.
The Pendet dance featuring in the latest controversial commercial has become a welcome dance. Each dancer carries a customary bowl filled with flowers, to be strewn to the audience.....
[JAKARTA POST] 26 Agustus - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on Tuesday asked the Malaysian government to deal more carefully with "sensitive" cultural issues between their two countries.
The request came after the recent news of the Balinese Pendet dance appearing in a Malaysian tourism advertising campaign. These advertisements had offended the Indonesian public, Yudhoyono said.
Nor was not the first time Malaysia had claimed an Indonesian cultural product as its own, he said, adding that the Malaysian government should not ignore this issue.
Indonesia and Malaysia had made progress in their partnership on labor issues, and therefore should be able to develop good partnership in the cultural sector, he said.
"I hope the Malaysian government can pay more attention to issues related to culture and the intellectual property rights of Indonesians. Don't let this matter disrupt relations between the two countries.
"Indonesia hasn't overreacted with its protest. This has now happened several times," Yudhoyono said after a Cabinet meeting to discuss a number of issues regarding Indonesia-Malaysia relations.
Through the Culture and Tourism Ministry, the government sent a letter of protest to Malaysia concerning the advertisements, Yudhoyono said. So far, Malaysia's response had been that the controversial advertisements presenting the Pendet dance were made by a Malaysian production house, he said.
The Malaysian government had also admitted a lack of monitoring of the production house and promised to reprimand it, Culture and Tourism Minister Jero Wacik said as quoted by Antara.Klip Video Berkaitan:
